01augAll DayEmancipation Day

Event Details

This day is set aside for the celebration of the “emancipation” of slaves in the Americas and the Caribbean, and that day in the lives of the freed slaves falls on the first day of August as per the Emancipation Proclamation in the United States of America.

Ghana started celebrating Emancipation Day in 1998 in solidarity with her brethren in the diaspora (African Descendants abroad). The event is also celebrated to encourage descendants of the soil to come back home and help rebuild Ghana and for that matter Africa from where they left off. This celebration has therefore become an event that has added another “jewel” to Ghana’s attractive destination and has succeeded in bringing into the country many Africans in the diaspora.

The symbolic interment has made Ghana the focus of the movement by Africans in the diaspora to come back to their mother continent. The interest that the programme has generated must be exploited to the fullest as the popularity of the Emancipation Day Celebration is increasing year after year. This interest must vigorously be sustained, and “re-uniting” the “African Family” …… must be a reality.
