What is the “Year of Return, Ghana 2019”?

The Government of Ghana recognising the powerful symbolism has designated 2019 the Year of Return, Ghana 2019 and is inviting Africans living in the Diaspora to consider this year as an opportunity to make meaningfully contact with the continent through Ghana. This landmark year equally presents a unique opportunity for Ghana to   renew its engagement with the Global African  Family for sustained , mutually beneficial   Each of the 12 months of  the year will feature  commemorative events produced  by a variety of organisations reflecting the diversity of the African global experience and concerns. The Year. I want to emphasize, the Year of Return, Ghana 2019 is for all members of the global diasporan family.

What is the Significance of 2019?

2019 is a landmark year marking the 400-year anniversary of the first documented arrival of  enslaved Africans in the English Colonies of North America.  They landed at  Point Comfort near James Town Virginia. The United States Congress has recently passed an Act, H.R. 1242 – 400 Years of African-American History. Not only is this a historically significant milestone, but it has generated a flurry of commemorative events a number of which are bringing large numbers of African Descendants to Ghana .This symbolic moment  offers a unique opportunity for a broad and deep conversation among communities of the Global African Family across the world about the real  impact of  the lengthy period of enslavement and colonialism   unless we can reach out to each other across the continents and beyond 400 years into a self-directed future?

What is the process to gain Ghanaian citizenship as a member of the diaspora?

The President of Ghana and Diaspora Affairs Office of The President have heard the calls of the diaspora living in Ghana and abroad in regards to citizenship. While there isn’t a timeline, rest assured that this is very important to leadership and a solution is actively being worked on. A status update will be communicated when new information is available.

How do I obtain a visa to travel to Ghana?

The Year of Return steering committee is working in conjunction with Foreign Affairs and Interior to ease the visa requirements for Year of Return, Ghana 2019. We should have an update soon. In the meantime, diasporans are encouraged to follow the current visa process.
